Mannequins, Saadoun Street, Baghdad, Iraq

Mannequins in Western dress, Baghdad, Iraq

These manneqins, reflected in a dress shop window on Saadoun Street in Baghdad represent the vast majority of Iraqi clothing shops for women in Baghdad, both before and after the U.S. invasion. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen (in Iraq, Jordan or Palestine) a mannequin dressed in what most Westerners presume to be “Arabic” dress (wearing a burqa, for example).

Most mannequins present women with plunging necklines, or necklines collarbone high, are sleeveless and colorful. For more about Western dress in Iraq (and stereotypes of Arabs and Arab customs and culture), see the image and essay Iraqi Women Wait To Be Photographed In Portrait Studio.
