Sgt. Robar begins to defuse the bomb

Sgt. Robar, an explosive ordnance specialist, begins to diffuse a home-made bomb on River Road, in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. U.S. Army National Guardsmen with Bravo Company, 124th Infantry Regiment, had walked past the brick pile about a half hour earlier, but the IED (improvised explosive device—filled with shards of heavy-gauge steel) hadn’t detonated. The soldiers received a message from Iraqi police, saying they’d just seen wires protruding from a pile of bricks on River Road. They returned to the site to search for more bombs.
